Lucie and Ash had a beautiful elegant wedding with touches of lilac, and the groom's amazing purple floral suit! The weather was glorious with beautiful sunshine all day (scroll down for the most gorgeous golden hour photographs). Lucie tells us all about their day; the budget, the best and worst of planning and saying yes to the dress.
How did you meet each other?
We met in late 2009 through mutual friends, bought out first home together in 2014 and got engaged in 2017. We got engaged on a weekend away in Scotland, and I still to this day do not know how Ash managed to hide my engagement ring in our suitcase considering I did all the packing!
Tell us about the proposal...
We were on a hike in a beautiful part of Scotland near Aberfoyle, and we stopped for a break to look out over a lake. There was nobody else around and I commented on how amazing the view was. Next thing I know, Ash said he wanted to ask me something and he was down on one knee proposing. I think I said yes, but I couldn’t stop crying for about half an hour!
Something...
- Something New: my wedding dress and wedding shoes
- Something Old, Borrowed and Blue – my mum sewed a blue gem from one of my great grandmother’s necklaces into the hem of my wedding dress
Tell us all about your wedding theme...
We had a late September wedding and we got so lucky with the weather as it ended up being what seemed like a hot summer’s day. Our wedding colours were pale grey and lilac which are colours we have always loved, but the main thing that people talk about is the fact that Ash wore an amazing purple floral suit!
What was the most emotional moment of the day?
Walking down the aisle is so emotional, and it’s so strange because although there were over 100 people watching me, I only remember seeing Ash waiting for me at the end of the aisle! The speeches were very emotional too.
Music
Song you walked down the aisle to: Turning page - Sleeping at Last
Song for walking back up the aisle as a married couple: You’re my best friend - Queen
First dance: Won’t last a day with you by The Carpenters
Advice for future brides...
One thing that soooo many people said to me was that the day goes fast so enjoy it, and they couldn’t have been more right! It goes so quick so relax, take it all in, and enjoy every second.
What was your Wedding Budget – and did you stick to it?
We wanted to keep our budget to around £20,000 and we managed to stick to it. We paid for the wedding ourselves, but some family members generously paid for certain things, for example my mum bought my wedding dress and my dad paid for wine for our guests during the meal.
Top money saving tip:
Create a wedding budget spreadsheet! I would update and review the spreadsheet every day and to be honest I loved it.
Tell us about the food...
We used Vanilla Catering for our food and drink on the day and I couldn’t recommend them enough. They were also one of the caterers recommended by our venue. They provided canapes straight after the wedding ceremony, a 3 course meal in the afternoon, and hot food during the evening reception. We also hired a bar service, but we provided wine for our guests during the 3 course meal – my Dad paid for this which I was very grateful for.
Who was your bride and groom squad?
My bridal squad was my sister (who was my maid of honour), my best friend and my sister in law. Ash’s groom squad was his best friend Andy (best man), my brother and Ash’s cousin.
What was your favourite wedding planning moment?
We created a wedding website. It was free to use/create, and all our guests used the website to RSVP which made it super easy to monitor. We also added information for guests including an itinerary of the day and travel information.
Tell us about the dress...
I visited Anya Bridal Couture in Droxford, Hampshire and had an amazing experience there, they make you feel really special and definitely recognize what you like and don’t like. I actually ended up getting my wedding dress from WED2B and took my siblings and mum with me. My dress was the Eleni dress, and as soon as I walked out to my family wearing it I started crying and absolutely fell in love with it.
What was the worst wedding planning moment?
Definitely the seating plan! My advice would be making it your first task, it gets it done and out the way so you can enjoy everything else.
Funniest moment of the day?
Definitely the best man Andy’s speech! The whole room was laughing, he captured Ash’s personality so well and the jokes and innuendos were hilarious.
What was your favourite part of the day?
It’s impossible to pick one part of the day as I loved every single second of it! But before the evening reception Ash and I snuck off to have 10 minutes to ourselves before the party started and it was so nice to take it all in.
Where did you find all of your inspiration?
Instagram and Pinterest will be your best friends when wedding planning! I would also recommend mood boards if you like that kind of thing.
Tell us about your wedding favours...
We did a bulk order of M&Ms! You can choose the colours, and they can also have pictures and phrases on them. We put them into little white organza bags which were set out on the tables for the meal.
Tell us about your Honeymoon...
We spent a week in Cancun, Mexico which was exactly what we needed to relax and unwind after the wedding and all the planning! Although we only spent a week away we both had 3 weeks off work to enjoy our newlywed bubble.
