How did you choose your venue?
Kirknewton House Stables was not where we originally planned on getting married. When we were looking for a venue, we loved Kirknewton but it was too small for our needs. However, when we started planning our 20-person wedding, our minds went straight to them. It turned out to be the prefect venue for our wee wedding.
Did you have have anything unusual at your wedding?
We provided masks, hand sanitiser and all the seating was social distanced! We are also planning a big celebration next year with all our friends in our original venue of Strawberry Barn. We can’t wait!!
Advice for future brides…
Having our original wedding plan taken away and having to re-plan it made me realise what was important. It wasn’t about having a big party, it was about getting married to the person I love in front of our families and everything else is just extra.
Tell us all about the dress…
My dress is a Maggie Sottero dress covered in a beautiful modern lace, definitely not what I had originally pictured! I initially wanted a very simple dress, no lace or sparkle, then my mum, my sister and I walked past a shop with a dress in the window individually and all fell in love with it. It was the first dress I tried on and all the other dresses afterwards were ‘not as good as the first’.
Tell us about the ceremony...
We had a religious ceremony, one of Dom’s groomsman and best friends is a Reverend and he married us.
Music
- Bridal Entrance: 500 Miles (Acoustic) by Jefr Tale ft. Louise Rademakers
- Bridal exit: 500 Miles by The Proclaimers
- First Dance: Lover by Taylor Swift
Were there any surprises on the day?
Dom didn’t know what song I was walking down the aisle to or what we would leave the ceremony to and of course my dress was a surprise!
Funniest moment of the day: We wrote our own vows which turned out to be so much fun and so personal to us!
What was your favourite wedding planning moment?
When Nicola Sturgeon announced that weddings of 20 people could go ahead, two weeks before our wedding day!
Wedding must-have: Great Photographers!! These photos are going to be up on our walls for the rest of our lives, having professionals who knew what they were doing made us feel at ease and made the day run smoothly. What was your favourite part of the day?
My favourite part of the day was getting our pictures taken. It was so nice having time with just the two of us (and our amazing photographers) to let it sink in that we were finally married! For Dom it was seeing me walk down the aisle and hearing the song I had chosen as it was a surprise.
Tell us about your Honeymoon...
Our Honeymoon will be in Mauritius in Paradise Cove next year – we’ll give you a report when we get back!
Favourite wedding supplier: Rachel and Tonie. They are such great photographers but also great people! They made the process relaxed and fun. Because we did our engagement shoot with them, we got to know them a bit more and we already knew what we were doing and what poses to do.
Tell us all about your wedding colours...
The colour theme was burgundy and pale pink. We chose it because we love burgundy, we basically planned an autumn wedding for the height of summer.
What was the worst wedding planning moment?
There was a week in the middle of lockdown where the wedding seemed really close, the house we were meant to be moving into wasn’t able to give us a move in date due to Covid, we didn’t have a wedding venue sorted and we still didn’t know if we would even be able to get married on our original planned date. That was a pretty rubbish wedding planning moment!
Funniest wedding photograph: There is a picture of Dom and I kissing both of our niece’s cheeks and her face is hilarious.
Tell us about the food...
Again, because of covid, we tried to choose food that had no cross contamination and we came up with individual afternoon teas from Casa Angelina in Edinburgh. Everyone had their own box of food catered to their dietary requirements.
Did you make any Wedding DIYs?
Yes, we did lots of DIY! Because of Covid I had to do my own hair, makeup and nails. My sister made our cake, and the bridesmaid bouquets. Dom made our name place cards with a personalised wax seal and one of my bridesmaids Kirsty made our signage.
Tell us about the cake...
It was a lemon cake with raspberry and prosecco jam in the middle, it was amazing! It was decorated with buttercream icing and flecks of gold leaf; she then added a few pieces of eucalyptus on the top.

What was your favourite wedding purchase?
- For me it was my dress (of course!)
- For Dom it was our personalised stamp from Etsy
What was your first dance song?
Lover – Taylor Swift. We winged the dancing. We chose the song because the first time we heard it we both cried. The lyrics are beautiful and very much rang true for us.
