Mr + Mrs Webber-Parr
Saturday 27th July 2019 │ Duncton Mill, West Sussex
Lifestyle blogger Jess @thestayoverlife and now husband Freddie had a gorgeous country wedding in West Sussex. Their day was filled with rustic DIY decor, a wonderful flower arch made by the bride's sister-in-law and vintage candles collected from charity shops. With their hearts set on marrying outdoors at Duncton Mill, the couple held their legal wedding ceremony in Edinburgh (see the photos at the end of this post). How did you meet each other?
A modern love story - swiped right on Tinder at the start of 2014.
Tell us about the proposal...
Freddie proposed in our first home we bought together. He woke me up and said there was a surprise in the kitchen, as I walked through the flat there was a path of hundreds of polaroid images of us and events throughout our five year relationship. When I got through to the kitchen Freddie was waiting for me and said “Here’s memories of the last five years, how about we make it a lifetime?” Got down on one knee and opened the ring box. I immediately burst into tears and couldn’t even speak from shock, it was such a big surprise! Then after we called friends and family to tell everyone our news he announced he’d booked a surprise holiday to Mallorca and we celebrated in real style for the following four days.
What kind of ceremony did you have?
We did our legal ceremony separately a week before the wedding. We had the party in West Sussex (where Freddie grew up) so we thought doing the legals in Edinburgh (where my family is from) was a nice touch to bring our two homes together.
See photos from Jess and Freddie's legal Edinburgh ceremony at the bottom of this post!
What was the most emotional moment of the day?
Seeing Freddie’s face as I walked down the aisle. Turning to him and holding his hands and seeing my own emotions mirrored in his face - love, joy, fear (haha). It felt like I was spinning but at that moment I also felt this moment of calm that this felt like the most right thing ever to happen in my life.
Tell us about your dress designer...
Claire Pettibone, ex sample gown from Bliss Bridal Studio Edinburgh. Steph, a dressmaker herself has been in the business 20+ years selling ex sample and pre loved gowns. I love her refreshing take in this expensive and sometimes wasteful industry, her prices are fair and everyone wins here because she’ll re-sell your dress and you’ll get 50% back.
Did you maker any wedding DIYs?
Yes SO MANY. Myself, my mum and my mother in law all dried out rose petals from our gardens for the confetti. My sister in law did a floristry course made us a flower arch from wild flowers and foliage. We made wedding signs and drink signs from old pallets. We collected lots of vintage candle sticks from charity shops in the run up which turned out to be a beautiful eclectic look on the tables.
Where did you find all of your inspiration?
Pinterest! We wanted a rustic outdoor style wedding. We quickly realised that the wedding you see on there cost WAY more than you expect so rounding up friends and family and doing lots of DIY bits for the day helped us stay within our budget but also achieve the vision we had for our wedding.
What was your favourite part of the day?
Everyone we love all being in the same room together laughing and chatting and dancing. There was this happy and loud feeling of energy that just felt like absolute sunshine (even though the irony is it was such a grey rainy day)
What was your Wedding Budget – and did you stick to it?
£30k. We went 10% over which we’d anticipated and had allowed a buffer for this.
Top money saving tip:
Figure out your budget and then work to a realistic timescale. If you can’t afford the wedding you want in 10 months then it’s definitely worth waiting another year and saving at a realistic pace. It’s better to have the money in advance than put it on a credit card you’re still paying off after your big day. Also give yourself a 10% buffer because there are always things that are a “MUST HAVE” that aren’t within your original budget.

What was your favourite wedding planning moment?
Surprisingly, the table layout. It was so much fun matchmaking all our friends trying to guess which groups would get on with other groups.
Best Wedding Splurge?
The food. It was a 1⁄3 of our whole budget but we wouldn’t change anything. When people recount their memories of our day back to us they always comment on how good the food was, and for two foodies that is the biggest compliment!
What food did you have at your wedding?
We wanted rustic sharing boards with all our favourite foods on them. Our caterers, Chefs On The Move, were so accommodating with our requests and we had a real mix of Spanish tapas and mezze. Grilled halloumi, roasted red peppers, hummus, warm breads, chorizo and olives to start. Followed by a choice of baked salmon or roasted bbq pork fillet with a spicy rub served with salads. We chose tray bake cakes and brownies with coffee for dessert whilst the speeches were going on.
Tell us about the cake...
A four tier cake from Foxwood Wedding Cakes, Chichester. We wanted a rustic iced look with wild flowers on it. Each tier was a different flavour and each as good as the next. Chocolate orange, cherry bakewell, lemon drizzle and white chocolate raspberry. We had our caterer slice off a slab from each tier for us to take home because it’s rare you get to enjoy the food on your big day as much as your guests do.
Advice for future brides...
Don’t stress about things you cannot control i.e the weather. The day is filled with so much love and everyone has made such an effort to be with you celebrating your day that focusing on the things that actually no one cares about isn’t worth your energy.
